The Door - RAM Project

Video Installation
Picture

Composer: Rockey Keting
Animators : Karolina Bielskyte , Alex Coad, Luisa Cruz and EwanSchwarz.
Location: Shoreditch Town Hall, THE DITCH, Old Document Store
Running time: 1:30s.
Project Event at The Ditch, Shoreditch at London: 15th June 2017

The annual collaborative project  with the Royal Academy of Music and UWE  involves collaborating with composers to realize a site specific experimental music film.

The project was based in the Three Penny Opera from 1928 at the Shoreditch at London and our video-installation projection idea is based on the door that leads from Old Document Store to Rivington Room. We used this opportunity and create a site-specific animation that was projected on top of the Old Document Store door and the sidewall with element from the Bauhaus art movement.

We used  two projectors to cover the wall with the door and the corner of the wall on the right.

I had the experience of my grad project which was a two video Installation Art.
all the info about that one is here: CATS MAKE YOU WANT TO STAY IN (2015)

DEVELOPMENT

Picture

The project's theme this year is based around the Royal Academy of Music's production of The Three Penny Opera (1928, Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weil), so our film project took into consideration the themes and objectives of this Opera and its writers  as well as the visual culture of the Weimar Germany (1919 - 1933)
THE LOCATION
We chose the Old Document's Room because the old door in the room and the times narrating the old construction of the site gave us the opportunity to play with an animation that would only work with those conditions as a backdrop.

EQUIPMENT LIST

● In our visit to The Ditch we noticed that the room DOES NOT have electric plugs on any wall. We need to connect 2 projectors and two laptops on this room.
● 2 Shelves for the projectors (these weigh around 5 kg each) at 2.10 - 2-10 m from the floor. These shelves should be 50 cm x 40 cm for the dimensions of the projector

This location is in the brick column between the fire door. Since this location doesn't have electric plugs, the electric extension for this projector could go over the fire door since we should not obstruct the door in case of an emergency.

We are going to use this window to locate the laptops and it may be useful to pass the extensions without them becoming a risk for the visitors.

STORYBOARD AND ANIMATIC
At this point, after visiting the location in person, the idea and style became clearer, and we created the layouts of our wall and the door to use it as a template to create our own visual combinations. We all worked separately at this point principally to give great variety to the visual impact and a space for everyone to interpret our artistic references in the space of the video-installation in relationship with our soundtrack.

As the resident storyboard artist, I took everyone's designs and image sequences and organized them on a timeline, following the beats and mixing our sequences according to the sound to create a cohesive rhythm wit hour designs. This gave us the opportunity to see how the visuals and the sound work together. To refine on this animatic we decided to design some more specific images to fill in the gaps that we had in our timeline to reflect the sound better.

ANIMATION
For this moment we had the music, the location, the right measurements of the wall and tests with the projectors. And we also had a locked visual and an animatic that we all liked.

From this moment we divided again the clips we would be working on to tie up the animation for the final show.
